 Who is eligible?

Students in their first, second or third year in a Basic Science, Behavioral Science, Analytical Health Science, Nursing, or Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Program at the University of Colorado Denver are eligible to apply for acceptance in the CCTSI PhD training program. Applicants for fellowship support must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, but foreign students and students with other support may apply to participate in the program without financial support.

This program is not designed for individuals who have completed the MD.  The CCTSI has other mechanisms to support translational research training for MDs (contact Marc Moss, MD, director of the education component of the CCTSI).

 Program Requirements

In addition to completing the requirements of their Ph.D. degree-granting program, CTSI trainees must complete the following:

Selected blocks of the 1st and 2nd year medical school curriculum can also be used to meet this requirement.  For example, the Nervous System Block (T.French), Cardio/Respiratory Block (B.Wallace), Endo/Metabolism Block (R.Michels).

Students must complete the following translationally-oriented course requirements.

  • Biostatistics (BIOS 6601, 6606, or 6611; 3 credit hrs)
  • Epidemiology (EPID 6630 or EPID 6631; 3 hrs)
  • Responsible Conduct of Research
  • COMIRB training (CITI; online)
  • HIPAA training and certification (online)

NOTE: Depending on the degree-granting program, some or all of these requirements will overlap with the existing didactic requirements of the degree-granting program or can be used to meet elective requirements of the degree-granting program.

Clinical Experience.  With assistance from the Clinical Integration Committee of the CTSI TL1 (T32) Program, each student will identify a clinician mentor who will develop and direct a clinical experience relevant to the student’s thesis project, and will be a member of the student’s thesis committee.  Each student’s clinical experience will be tailored to their thesis research and may include participation in relevant clinical conferences, a direct clinical experience, and preparation of a clinical research protocol. Students will report on their clinical experience at thesis committee meetings, and include a report on the clinical experience in their thesis.

Participation in the CTSI ‘T-Club’ activities designated for CTSI PhD trainees.
