Project T.E.A.C.H. (Teaching Equity to Advance Community Health)

A Winning Collaboration to Achieve Health Equity

 About the Program

Project TEACH Logo

Funded by the Colorado Office of Health Disparities, Project TEACH provides targeted training, technical assistance and support to community-based organizations (CBOs) involved in projects to reduce health disparities in chronic diseases and their risk factors.

Who we are: Angela Sauaia, MD, PhD (Director); Judith Baxter, MA; Elaine Belansky, PhD;  Jack Westfall, MD; Jennifer McIntyre Stachelski (Program Manager), Myrna Candreia (NCI-CIS) and all AHECs personnel. We are a partnership between the University of Colorado Denver, the Area Health Education Centers (AHECs), the NCI-Cancer Information Service and the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CCTSI).

 What We Offer

Free one-on-one training to Colorado community-based organizations involved in health disparities projects, on:

  • health disparities data: obtaining and understanding the health disparities data profile of your region
  • cultural competence: working collaboratively with individuals from diverse cultures
  • community engagement:  how to engage your target community(ies) to address their needs
  • evidence-based interventions: how to find, adapt and use interventions shown to work (and what to do if there aren't any...)
  • evaluation: how to show your success and learn about how to improve
  • grant writing: have one of our faculty work with you on your grant

In addition, participants receive a USB drive loaded with county level health disparities data (and how to get updates), validated tools to measure nutrition, physical activity, and other health behaviors, sites where you can find evidence-based intervention, as well as many other resources related to the topics above. Most of the work is done via phone and e-mail, with one live workshop.

For more information or to apply, please e-mail the Project Manager, Nicole Tuitt or the Project Director Angela Sauaia, MD, PhD, at  for more information.
